CURCHOREM: Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) recently fined 19 shopkeepers in its drive against encroachments in the Curchorem market.
The CCMC issued challans ranging from Rs 200 to 500 to the shopkeepers depending upon the illegal space occupied in the market. The amount of Rs 4,400 was collected in the form of fines during the drive.
Speaking to media persons, Assistant Market Inspector Dhiraj Dessai said the drive would continue peacefully without any arguments with the shopkeepers and that these challans would be issued daily to those who encroached on open spaces or footpaths in the market. Curchorem Merchants’ Association president Anil Maad Kamat called upon the CCMC to be impartial in its drive.
It may be recalled that CCMC had sent out warnings to shopkeepers in the market before commencing its drive encroachment.
CCMC has received complaints from the people against the shopkeepers, who have encroached on the open spaces and footpaths in Curchorem market.
Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes informed that CCMC has initiated action against those shopkeepers who encroached on the open spaces in the market.
A section of the shopkeepers have alleged that CCMC is only targeting a section of shopkeepers while allowing  vegetable, fruit and other vendors to occupy the open space around the old municipality building in Curchorem market.
