In the first incident, an unidentified vehicle knocked down Bhatpal local, Felician Dominic Fernandes (50), as he crossed the road to get to his house. The incident occurred at Mokhard-Bhatpal at 10 pm on Friday. The driver fled from the accident site.
On hearing the impact, locals rushed out of their houses and found the victim’s blood-stained slippers. They rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC), Canacona hoping the injured may have been taken there by the vehicle that hit him. After learning that nobody had been admitted there recently, the locals rushed back to the accident site. They scoured the area and found Felician gasping for breath in a drain.
He was first taken to CHC, then Hospicio Hospital, Margao, and finally to the GMC, Bambolim, where he was declared dead at 5.30 am on Saturday.
According to Canacona police, the body was handed over to his relatives after conducting the post-mortem. The funeral took place on Saturday.
The police are reportedly hot on the trail of a vehicle suspected to have travelled towards Karwar after hitting Felician.
In the second incident, a pedestrian was knocked down and killed by a truck at Gulem, Canacona on Saturday. The identity of the victim is yet to be established, although his age is suspected to be between 32 to 35 years.
Canacona police tracked and impounded a Tamil Nadu-registered inter-state truck (TN-37 H-7108). The body was dispatched for post-mortem and preservation at Hospicio. Further investigations are on. PSIs Arjun Gaonkar and Paresh Ramnathan are the investigating officers in both cases.
