Aryan Rajput, a final year LLB student touched the 17-year-old’s shoulder as she stepped out of a government colony with her maternal aunt to buy batteries for a TV remote. She had come to visit her brother for Ganesh Chaturthi.
The locals caught and beat up both the tourists, before handing them over to the Panjim police. Sources said that the accused almost escaped from the custody when he jumped off the police jeep when it halted outside the local police station. The personnel caught him near Geeta bakery after a brief chase.
In her statement to the Victims’ Assistance Unit, the victim alleged that the intention of the accused, to molest her, was deliberate.
Police have charged the duo under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and will seek details of Rajput from the law college where he has been pursuing studies and is investigating the case to get to the truth.
