267 apply for MMC waste collection job

MARGAO: There’s no dearth of candidates for Margao Municipal Council’s door-to-door waste collection programme.

A walk-in interview fixed by the civic body on Friday saw around 267 candidates turning up for the interview, including a good number of women. The civic body has a choice to choose amongst the lot since they are on the look out for 200 daily wage workers, while the number of candidates who have walked in for the interview was 267.
MMC Chief Officer, Narayan Sawant informed that the process of recruiting the daily wage workers would be completed by Monday before the new recruits are trained to handle door-to-door waste collection.
Replying to a question, he said the recruitment of the 200 daily wage workers for door-to-door waste collection is estimated to cost the civic body around Rs 70,000 a day at a daily wage of Rs 350.
City fathers have asked the council to seek government grant to tide over the huge wage bill as the civic body would be poorer by Rs 20 lakh every month.
He said the MMC has received the first quota of bins, but made it clear that the civic body would go ahead with the door-to-door programme from July 22 with or without the additional bins.
