Suicide attempt prevented
PONDA: An alert passer-by thwarted the efforts of a woman who was about to jump off the Borim bridge along with her 8-year-old daughter on Saturday morning. According to Ponda police, the passer-by stopped at the bridge on noticing the mother planning to jump off and managed to persuade the mother to avoid ending her life and committing the murder of her daughter. Ponda police was informed of the incident and rushed to the site. The woman and her daughter were counselled, before they were sent home.
Body recovered at Bicholim
BICHOLIM: The male body recovered by Bicholim police near the Pawlar Bridge at Navelim-Bicholim has been identified as Govind Aba Gawade (52) from Gawantwada-Cumbharjua. It may be recalled that a male body was found hanging from a tree behind the Pawlar Bridge at Navelim and the deceased had committed a suicide on September 13. On reading reports regarding an unidentified body in the newspapers, a family member contacted Bicholim police and later identified the body. PSI Datta Naik is investigating the case.
Gujarati held with drugs
CALANGUTE: A 40-year-old Gujarati man was on Friday arrested by Calangute Police night on charges of possessing drugs worth Rs 7,000. According to police reports, Sandip Darji was found with 45 grammes of Charas at the Calangute market. A mobile handset and cash of Rs 2,000 was also recovered from his possession. The accused was presently residing at Umtta Vaddo, Calangute. Calangute Police is investigating the case.
Theft likely motive in Naik’s murder
PANJIM: The possible motive in the killing of the tourist-taxi driver Prashant Naik in Haveri (Karnataka) this week, could be car theft, surmised Panjim police Saturday. Naik, whose vehicle was hired by two ‘passengers’ to Hubli from Panjim on the night of September 21, was found dead and his decomposed body was recovered from the interiors of Haveri’s main road Thursday. The owner of tourist vehicle Toyota Innova GA-07-F-1155 had filed a complaint after his driver failed to respond on the cell phone and the car was missing. Naik allegedly ferried the passengers without informing him. Initial findings revealed that the car was spotted at Ranebennue in Haveli and it driver was moving around in a suspicious manner in adjoining areas. Police have released the sketch of one of the two suspected murderers but neither the vehicle nor the suspects have been traced so far.
Norman remanded further
PANJIM: Norman Fernandes, who according to the police is the prime accused in the St Cruz double murder, has been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days, Saturday. Police say that Norman killed his sister Noreen Fernandes e Vaz and her mother-in-law Aurita Vaz, and also attempted to kill Noreen’s husband Edgar. Norman who also sustained injuries during the attack was arrested after being discharged from the hospital and sent to 14 days police remand. The Old Goa police have however failed to come clear on Edgar.
Ponda teen ends life
PONDA: A 16-year-old girl from Marcela reportedly ended her life by jumping off the Amona Bridge late Friday night. Ponda police informed that the girl left behind a suicide note at home and her footwear was found on the bridge. In her suicide note, the girl stated that she is committing suicide and requested her brother to study well, Ponda police said. The body of the deceased is yet to be traced and police investigations are in progress.

Rare heart infection managed at AVH
PANJIM: Apollo Victor Hospitals (AVH) Margao ~ which marks completion of 10 years of cardiac excellence this year, successfully treated a 49-year-old male who was moved their casualty from another hospital in serious condition. Dr Uday Khanolkar and Dr Biju Ephrem, interventional cardiologists, on cardiac evaluation, found that the patient had ‘Acute Infective Endocarditis’ associated with heart failure. Surgery involving both valves in the left side of the heart was needed. Dr Sharan Hallad, cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon and his team performed the surgical procedure, which involved draining of the abscess and replacement of both, the diseased heart valves with mechanical valves. The patient recovered completely and was discharged after 10 days.
Kantaram contest winners
PANJIM: The prize distribution ceremony of the 2nd All Goa Konkani Kantaram competition organized by Department of Konkani, MES College of Arts & Commerce, Zuari Nagar in collaboration with Tiatr Academy Goa and Kala Academy was held recently.
Chief guest MLA Vishnu Wagh said, “Konkani ‘Kantar’ is an unique aspect of Goan culture and part of identity, hence, this need to be preserve and promoted. Kantar and music are forms of art which have a strong binding force of unity and identity,” he added.
“Hard work and punctuality are the main keys for success” said Prince Jacob while speaking as guest of honour.
Stefny Pedrosa of Dhempe College, Miramar won the 1st Prize for the song ‘Bebdo.’ Menoy D’souza of Rosary College, Navelim came in second with ‘Mog Boom Boom’ while Elaine Pinto, also of the same college was third.
Principal Dr Maria Rodrigues welcomed while Vice Principal Prof V V Sail proposed vote of thanks.
Exams preparatory series released
PANJIM: Rajhauns Vitaran, a publishing house in the field of education, has released its series of preparatory sets for students of std VIII, IX for the 1st term and that of std X and XII for the March/April 2014 board examination.
The titles of std VIII and IX consist of 3 question papers out of which 2 are solved in subjects such as English, Hindi, Maths, Science and Soc Science.
