MARGAO: Three persons hailing from Shirdi, Maharashtra were caught red handed while selling tiger nails at an exhibition underway at the SGPDA ground, Margao on Sunday.
Acting on a tip off, the forest officials swooped on the three accused and seized from their possession the three nails, besides cash of Rs 68,000. The trio Suraj Raju Jamkar, 21, Kallu Ranganath Yuki, 30 and Hemanth Patil Jamker, 32 years were later placed under arrest. The Forest department will seek their remand for a period of seven days.
Range Forest Offier, Dyneshwar Kudalkar told the media that the department constituted two teams of officials to carry out the raid upon receiving information that the trio were selling tiger nails at the exhibition. “While one team waited outside, the second team in plainclothes approached the trio and struck a deal for the sale of the nails before apprehending them red handed”, he said.
Kudalkar put the estimated value of the tiger nails to Rs 45,000 in the market.
Sources in the know said the accused are believed to have sold some nails at the rate of Rs 15,000 before the Forest department acted on information about the illegal sale.Further investigations are on.
