MARGAO: Three Salcete panchayats have decided to join hands to tackle the garbage problems in the villages as all three are adjoining. This was decided after they jointly visited the garbage treatment plant at Saligao and discussed garbage management with Sanjit Rodrigues and other officials there.
The three panchayats that have joined hands are Aquem Baixo, Davorlim Dicarpale and Rumdamol Davorlim whose panchayat members led by the sarpanchas visited the plant at Saligao. It may be noted that Rumdamol Davorlim panchayat has already launched a “No plastic carry bag” drive in the village.
Panchayat members have distributed cloth bags to be used for shopping to all the households and are also monitoring the shops in the village most of which have stopped giving plastic carry bags. However, the panchayat has not fined anybody as yet for giving or carrying plastic bags.
In fact at the Zilla Panchayat meeting held on June 8 Davorlim representative Ulhas Tuenkar has asked the Zilla Panchayat to help acquire Davorlim communidade land to set up a mini-garbage treatment plant that would be used by the three panchayats.
