The Tourism Department has proposed three skywalks to ease the movement of pedestrians around the main bus stand area, here, even as it has felt the need to beautify the terminal itself to build the image of the capital city’s entry point.
Director of Tourism Swapnil Naik said while the interior parts in the city are being beautified, the entry point to the city where the Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) bus stand is located gives a dismal look on account of the choc-a-bloc traffic during peak hours. As a result of this pedestrians find it difficult to walk and cross in the area, he stated.
Naik said a skywalk is an elevated walkway (usually enclosed) that will facilitate walking at ease for the pedestrians by keeping them away from the hustle and bustle of the traffic below. The project is at a nascent stage and a detailed project report is awaited, he informed.
As per the proposal the first skywalk will extend up to the area across the road from where inter State buses leave for different destinations. Also, the department proposes to beautify this area where these buses are parked.
The second skywalk proposed is from the Maruti Temple, situated close to the bus stand, to the Shrama Shakti Bhavan. This walkway will extend towards the Dempo Towers nearby.
The third elevated walkway, which is quite long, has been envisaged over the Ambedkar Garden leading to the Santa Monica Jetty that witnesses a mad rush of tourists during the peak season for the famous boat rides over river Mandovi. During peak hours the area near the jetty always witnesses heavy traffic.

The beautification as per the proposal will also be extended to the stretch between the KTC circle and Dr Jack Sequeira circle towards Merces.
