MARGAO: Since the last fortnight, on an average, 45 new patients have been admitted to the COVID Hospital, which operates from the South Goa District Hospital premises at Fatorda as the ESI Hospital has stopped admitting COVID patients.

COVID patients are generally sent home after seven days depending upon the severity of the attack and Tuesday witnessed 49 patients being admitted to the COVID hospital. Incidentally, this hospital is only for patients from South Goa as those from North Goa are treated at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.
Earlier, the ESI Hospital was also treating COVID patients and since end of February 2021, it has stopped admitting COVID patients though it continues to be backup premises primarily for travellers coming from the United Kingdom.
The ESI Hospital started admitting COVID patients on March 16, 2020 and only the top two floors of the hospital were used for them. However, since March 25, 2020, the entire hospital was converted into a COVID Hospital and initially travellers coming from abroad were admitted here.
Till date, ESI hospital has treated 2605 patients of which 2391 patients, who recovered, were sent home. However, 214 patients succumbed to the infection and the recovery rate was around 92 per cent.
Dr Vishwajit Faldessai disclosed that 717 COVID patients even underwent dialysis at the hospital while, 534 patients had to undergo plasma treatment.
All 64 persons, who arrived from the United Kingdom, were admitted to the hospital on December 9, 2020 as they were suspected to be infected with the new virus strain.
However, that fear proved to be wrong as they were all discharged after the 14-day quarantine period.
The ESI Hospital now operates as a regular hospital attending to patients insured under the ESI while, the South Goa District Hospital premises has been converted into a full-fledged COVID hospital for South Goa.
