Cases booked against Goa distilleries too

The Mangalore Excise Dept has applied to the state government to book five persons under the Goonda Act for their repeated involvement in the illegal manufacture and transport of liquor from Goa. Joint Commissioner of Excise K Bheemappa said that final action by the state authorities is awaited.
The Joint Commissioner said that cases have also been booked against some owners of the distilleries in Goa for illegal transportation. He was speaking to the media on Wednesday after disposing off illicit liquor worth Rs 8 lakh seized by the department.
Bheemappa said that the five offenders were Preethipal Adyanthaya, Kabaddi Sudhir, Kokkada Haneef, Jayaram Shetty and Ramachandra. Section 43 (A) of the Karnataka Excise Act provides for booking of offenders who have been convicted thrice for illegal manufacture and transportation of liquor under the Goonda Act.
Deputy Superintendent of Excise N M Hussain said that the illegal liquor was seized during raids conducted on the highway and in trains, after tip-offs from the Excise intelligence network over the last six months. The seized stock mostly transported from Goa, for sale in Kerala. In all, 84 vehicles had also been seized, of which 15 are to be auctioned next month, he said.
