The victim writes an email to managing editor Shoma Chaudhury on the alleged sexual assault. The victim demands an inquiry and an apology from Tejpal on November 18, 2013.
Tejpal sends a email to Chaudhury, admitting a ‘bad lapse of judgment’. He recuses himself from the magazine’s editorship for six months as ‘penance’ for his ‘misconduct’. Chaudhury forwards Tejpal’s email to Tehelka staff.
On November 21 Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar briskly says an inquiry will be conducted into the incident by the Police.
On November 22 the police immediately take suo motu cognisance and lodge an FIR, just two days after the issue becomes public.
On November 23, within three days, a police team arrives in Delhi, questions Choudhary at the Tehelka office. The police also question three Tehelka staffers named as witnesses. Victim issues statement saying attempts being made to pressurise her family.
Complainant resigns on November 25, says she has been deeply traumatised by the lack of support from the organisation.
November 26: The Police records the girl’s statement.
Tejpal arrested on December 1.
Tejpal released only a couple of days back on regular bail.
Camurlim rape case
The victim a single mother who was subjected to a brutal sexual assault – with chilly powder inserted into her genital, hit with a stick on June 23 –had spoken about her earlier experiences and the laxity of the police during an International Women’s Day function in the capital on March 8, where police officers, and social activists were present.
The brutal sexual assault took place on June 23 (Monday). Police filed non cognizable offense though bruises were detected on her body and chilly powder allegedly found in the genitals of the victim.
After relentless media pressure and public outcry, police register a case of rape and assault three days later on June 26 (Wednesday).
Police arrest the three accused after shocking delay of five days on June 27 (Thursday) and take the victim of the brutal sexual assault for a medical examination on June 28 (Friday).
Three accused –male neighbour, his mother and wife get police custody for seven days.
Mapusa police team comprising SDPO Mahesh Gaokar and Mapusa Police Inspector Tushar Vernekar – conducted a panchanama at the crime scene only six days after the women was sexually and physically assaulted in broad daylight.
Custody extended by another 7 days on June 3.
