50 TPD bio-methanation plant to be setup at Sonsoddo: Monserrate

“Presently the remediation works at Sonsoddo dumpsite are suspended due to rains and same shall be resumed post monsoon,” Monserrate said

PORVORIM: Waste Management Minister Atanasio Babush Monserrate on Friday said that the government intends to set up a 50-ton per day (TPD) bio-methanation facility for the treatment of wet waste at the Sonsoddo dump site after completion of the ongoing remediation of the legacy waste dump.

Monserrate said that the remediation process will be completed by March 2023, and the time for completion of the disposal of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) is 36 months excluding monsoon which is up to January 2025.

“Presently the remediation works at Sonsoddo dumpsite are suspended due to rains and same shall be resumed post monsoon,” Monserrate said in a reply to the question tabled by Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco.

The Minister said that presently the process of preparing a detailed project report (DPR) and estimates is initiated by Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC), which will be undertaking it as a deposit work from Margao Municipal Council (MMC). He said the features of the plant will be decided during the preparation of a DPR.

“In contrast, the remediation of piled-up garbage inside the existing shed and outside the periphery of the shed will be done by GWMC from out of the annual grant-in-aid released by the Department of Science and Technology and Waste Management,” the Minister said.

As a short-term measure,  Monserrate said that GWMC has prepared the tender for the work of ‘Operation and Maintenance of Sonsoddo Waste Management facility at Margao’ for the treatment of 30 TPD wet waste.
