PANJIM: In a major raid at Patradevi, the Commercial Tax department on Tuesday detained 51 vehicles carrying various goods including 80 two-wheelers, suspected to be distributed to voters.
As per information with the Chief Electoral Office 217 vehicles were intercepted carrying goods and 51 were impounded for inquiry.
The vehicles contained 40 motorcycles, 40 bikes, 240 water heaters worth an estimated at Rs 88.21 lakh.
“The goods vehicles were detained for inquiry and it was found that the goods were without prior permission and hence suspected for use in election by evading tax,” a press note stated.
The vehicles also contained mineral water and biscuits.
which are suspected to be for free distribution to party workers.
Transportation of goods like motorcycle, television, art, mobiles, laptops, computer and household appliances require prior intimation to the department.
With polling to be held on February 4, the election model code of conduct is in force, with the CEO through various agencies like police, commercial tax and excise, is keeping strict vigil on movement of goods, liquor and money.
