PANJIM/ PORVORIM: The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Mapusa on Friday remanded 52 Nigerians, arrested on charges of violence on the National Highway (NH) 17 at Porvorim on Thursday, to 14 days judicial custody.
Ensuring foolproof security, the police vans were accompanied by escort police till Aguada jail, where they were lodged. The jail authorities have made enough security arrangements to ensure they don’t escape or create nuisance.
Goa police have slapped serious charges like attempt to murder, rioting, threatening and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, Public Property Damage Act and NH Act against the Nigerians. Sources have said that only one of them had his original passport while the rest had photocopies of documents.
Police informed that out of the four Nigerians, who sustained serious injuries during the riot, two were discharged from Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim while the other two are still undergoing treatment.
One police constable Rajesh Kandolkar and a home guard Bisso Mandrekar were also hurt.
While two separate cases are being investigated against the Nigerians and the locals, who assaulted the Nigerians, Mapusa police are still groping in the dark to identify Obina Poul Obirace’s murderers.
Meanwhile, the inquest panchanama of the body was conducted on Friday evening while the post-mortem will be conducted on Saturday.
