MARGAO: This year, police stations across the South Goa district booked 5,808 cases under the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 1996, which prohibits the disposal of garbage in public places, drains, water bodies, etc, and imposed fines on the violators.
The highest number of 1,591 cases were booked by the Curchorem police, 897 by the Ponda police, 775 by the Cuncolim police and 542 by the Fatorda police. The Canacona police have booked 674 cases. Police officials said that these cases were booked against persons found dumping garbage and those using plastic or selling their wares in plastic bags that are not permitted by the government. Even as piles of garbage are seen dumped in black spots across Margao town, and scores of shopkeepers are seen providing customers with plastic bags, the Margao police only booked 244 cases till date this year. The minimum number of 15 cases were booked in Mormugao and 26 cases were booked by the Verna police, while the Collem police station reported 50 violators. No cases were booked by the Vasco railway police and airport police authorities.

Maina-Curtorim police inspector Ravi Dessai, whose police station booked125 cases, said they were undertaking a special drive to create awareness and deter people from littering.
