60 per cent deficit rainfall in June

PANJIM: Monsoons in Goa are very far from normal this season with the State facing an average of 60 per cent seasonal deficit during the month of June.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa Centre the seasonal total rainfall recorded at the Panjim Observatory since June 1 has been 25.8 cms against the normal of 64.3 cms which is 38.5 cms less from the normal.
The state has been facing rainfall deficit even before the onset of the monsoons as the pre-monsoon showers too skipped Goa. Earlier in the month cyclone Vayu in the Arabian Sea off the Konkan Coast led to the delay in the pre-monsoon as well as monsoon showers.
IMD – Goa Director, Dr Krishnamurthy Padgalwar had stated “The delay can be attributed to the cyclone Vayu which passed off the coast of Goa in the Arabian Sea, taking away all the moisture from the surface.”
Subsequently, announcing the arrival of the monsoons on June 20, IMD – Goa has issued warning that the state would witness heavy rainfall in isolated places. However, there has been no respite from the heat as expected during this time of the year.
IMD’s report for 24 hours from Saturday to Sunday afternoon stated “South-west Monsoon was weak over Goa state. Rain/Thundershower occurred at most places over Goa state.”
