MARGAO: All the eight gram sabhas in Salcete on Sunday unanimously resolved to oppose the setting up of a coal hub at Mormugao Port Trust in Goa, while six opposed to the inclusion of six Goan rivers in the Schedule of National Waterways as two gram sabhas had objected to the same at the last meeting.
As Curtorim and Chandor-Cavorim, villagers had already objected to the inclusion of the 6 Goans rivers in the schedule of national waterways resolutions pertaining to that topic though tables were not taken up for discussion.
However, the gram sabhas of Nuvem, Sao Jose de Areal, Sarzora, Davorlim Dicarpale, Rumdamoll Davorlim and Paroda objected to the inclusion of the Goan rivers in the schedule.
The nationalization will lead to using the rivers to transport bulk cargo and result in total destruction of the marine ecology and fisheries to serve some private interest and also opposed the storage yards proposed to be set up in khazan lands.
The above named six gram sabhas along with Curtorim and Chandor Cavorim also objected to the development of a coal hub at Mormugao Port Trust due to the pollution it would cause.
The Paroda gram sabha also asked the panchayat to write to the chief minister asking for what exactly would happen to the Goan rivers that are included in the Scheduled for National Waterways.
