PORVORIM: Amidst the ongoing debate on the influx of migrants in the State, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant admitted that around 85 per cent of the heinous crimes are committed by migrants. To curb crime, the government has decided to tighten the noose around landlords who rent out their premise to outsiders, without ensuring police verification.
“On an average, 80-85 per cent cases of murder and rape are committed by migrants. Many of them have leased out rooms without verification. These migrants who have been arriving in Goa for different work purposes have no labour card, no proof of where they have been staying…” he said, mentioning the double murder case at Fatorda.
To crack down on these migrants, besides landlords who have been violating the mandatory rules of tenant verification, the CM said the government is set to introduce a new Verification of Tenant Bill that will give powers to the police to prosecute the violators.
Meanwhile, Goa Police have launched a drive to verify tenants across the State. “The drive (to identify the tenants) is underway and all (including the landlords) should cooperate. The landlords should furnish tenant verification forms at their respective police stations while renting out their rooms/accommodation to outsiders,” he added.
The CM mentioned the Fatorda double murder as he applauded the police for solving the case within 12 hours by arresting a Karnataka native.
