Fisherfolk ready to take to the waters after Narali Purnima; Breakwater project awaits Forest NOC, says minister

MAPUSA/ CANACONA:  Chapora fishermen commenced their fishing activities on Monday after offering coconut to the sea on the occasion of Narali Purnima.
Chapora fishermen kick started their fishing business after offering coconut to sea at the hands of WRD Minister Vinod Palyekar. The fishing activities of the Chapora fisherman have been delayed due to the annual sand bay issues.
WRD Minister Vinod Palyekar said, “The Rs 50 crore breakwater project is currently pending as it is yet to get NOC from Forest Department on account of the tortoise nesting on Morjim beach. Palyekar informed that the issue will be discussed with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar after the assembly session and assured a solution. Palyekar said that once the NOC is issued the project will commence.
Meanwhile, Narali Purnima was celebrated at Talpona. Narali Purnima, also known as ‘Coconut Day’ is an important festival celebrated majorly by Hindus. It is observed on the ‘ Purnima’ (full moon day) in the month of ‘Shravana’ in the Hindu calendar and therefore referred as ‘Shravana Purnima ‘. It holds a lot of importance for the entire fishing community. 
Meanwhile, at the Malim jetty, the Mandovi Fishermen Marketing Co-operative Society Ltd, Malim, celebrated Narali Pournima at Malim Jetty.  Vice Chairman Francisco D’Souza performed Samudra pooja and offered coconut and flowers to the sea, praying for good fishing season this year.
