Unique ID for Goans on cards

PANJIM: The State is considering a proposal for giving Goans their very own identity numbers by creating a database of information, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said while speaking at the Statistics Day function organised by the Department of Planning and Statistics Saturday.
Goa has almost attained cent per cent coverage under the Aadhar Card (UIDAI) enrolment as of today. This move comes at time when the movement for Special Status for Goa is gaining momentum and could make Goa the first State to have its own UID, if it initiates this process.
Parrikar said that Goa is the first State to have attained almost 98 per cent enrolment under Aadhar (Unique Identification Authority of India) and a lot of data such as finger impressions and cornea scans which Goa would like to have on its database is not being shared.
“Based on Aadhar enrolment we can now give our own identity numbers and create a database with finger impressions, cornea scans and other personal data as well,” he said.
According to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar it is a big achievement that even as Goa is close to reaching the 100 per cent mark of Aadhar enrolment and the first State having attained this success while other States, he said, are trailing behind with 40/60 per cent coverage only.
He hailed the contributions of the Planning and Statistics department in assisting the government on this front and urged them to start uploading statistical data of schemes and other information.
The chief minister said, “Shortly we will be linking the Aadhar identity numbers of beneficiaries to the schemes,” he said.
This move has been on for a while in a bid to weed out irregularities, bogus beneficiaries and so on.
During his brief address, the chief minister said that he would try to ensure that the Planning and Statistics department moves to its new premises Yojna Bhavan by Diwali this year where the actual benefits of the research and data collection by the department is made known, available and put to optimum use.
Earlier, the director of Planning and Statistics, who is also Additional Secretary Budget Anand Sherkhane pointed to the on-going departmental project backed by the State Planning Commission of developing Neturli village as a ‘model village’.
“We are trying to make the farmers get economically stronger,” he said adding that the next stage is to see them achieve strides in education, health and infrastructure development.
“We will make Neturli village a model village so that other States in the country could also emulate this model,” he said.
Joint Director Planning and Statistics VB Saxena handed over a cheque of Rs 51,000 to the Chief Minister as part of the department’s contribution to the Uttarakhand Disaster Relief Fund.
