MAPUSA: Traffic congestion continues to be the order of the day in Mapusa especially at the Aldona motorcycle stand junction, Gandhi Circle and near Joao Menezes junction in the absence of traffic signals.
The Aldona motorcycle stand junction remains congested throughout the day as it connects several roads namely the ones leading to the market, administrative building, highway at Tar and other internal routes.
Similar situation is witnessed near Joao Menezes Pharmacy where internal roads are connected to the main road from the court junction. The Gandhi Circle too faces congestion during the peak hours as it’s the main road to enter the Mapusa from Panjim and Calangute.
It is pertinent to note that the municipality after installing traffic signals at court junction, the traffic movement at this junction has eased.
However, the need for installing traffic signals is felt at Aldona motorcycle pilot junction, Gandhi Circle and Joao Menezes Pharmacy on account of heavy traffic congestion. Five to six traffic police personnel deployed at these locations find it difficult to control traffic movement especially during the peak hours.
To add to its cup of woes, Mapusa is also facing parking issue on account of lack of proper space, which has forced commuters to park their vehicles on the road.
Mapusa Traffic PI Tushar Vernekar said, “We have already sent several letters to Mapusa Municipal Council to install traffic signals at different junctions but we haven’t received any response as yet”.
MMC chairperson Shubhangi Vaigankar said, “Mapusa faces a major problem of traffic congestion. We have plans to install signals at different locations”.
