ACB summons Oppn leader, GPCC chief in SEZ scam

PANJIM: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Luizinho Faleiro and Opposition Leader Pratapsingh Rane have been summoned by ACB of the Vigilance Department for interrogation in the multi-crore SEZ land allotment scam.

ACB officials said that Faleiro has been summoned on October 25 and Rane the next day, along with a few others, so that their statements can be recorded.
The allotment of plots had been done in 2005 when Rane was chief minister and Faleiro was industries minister. Chandrakant (Babu) Kavalekar was the chairman of the GIDC and has been interrogated by ACB a couple of times.
ACB had drawn a list of 20 people, including officers and politicians, linked to the allotment of industrial land to seven SEZs at a throwaway price.
The land, measuring around 38 lakh square metres, belonging to GIDC was acquired and illegally allotted under the SEZ scheme to the promoters. Following strong protests by locals and NGOs, a PIL was filed in the High Court. The court had observed illegalities in land allotment to the SEZ promoters. In 2010, the HC had set aside the allotment of land to the seven promoters and upheld the decision of government to scrap the SEZ policy. The land is presently in the litigation between promoters and the government, and the latter is yet to recover and take the land into its possession leading to a major setback to the State’s industrial expansion.
The promoters include K Raheja & Corporation, Maxgrow Finlease, Metitab Specialties, Peninsula Pharma Research Centre, Planetview Mercantile, Inox Mercantile Company and Paradigm Logistics & Distribution.
