MARGAO: Social activists along with locals from Seraulim, Mungul and Madel once again stopped the land filling work for western bypass near the wholesale fish market on Tuesday.
It is pertinent to note that the Public Works Department (PWD) has gone ahead with the work despite objections.
After noticing the mud-laden trucks, the locals rushed to the site and found over 10 trucks dumping mud in the low-lying areas. When the locals demanded the legal documents the site supervisor failed to produce them.
“How come they continue with the land filling work without legal documents,” asked Benjamin Fernandes, a Seraulim resident.
“We asked the people engaged in the work to produce the legal documents and they had nothing with them. Hence, we stopped the work,” Benjamin added.
It is also pertinent to note that the matter is still pending in the court and concerned authority is yet to finalise the recommendation made by the 10-member committee, which was formed to study the matter on the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
Recently, when the locals along with a few political leaders objected to the ongoing work, the PWD officials had promised to present the new maps to the public. However, they failed to do so and continued with the land filling work.
