MAPUSA: Environmental and social activists on Saturday held a peaceful protest at Mapusa condemning the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar for promising to give Mhadei water for drinking to the people of Hubli and Dharwad.
This promise was reportedly made in a letter that Prrikar given to the Karnataka BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa.
The protesters demanded that Parrikar withdraw the letter given to Yeddyurappa.
Activist Prajal Sakhardande said, ‘Divche Na re Divche Na Aamchi Mhadei Divchena’ is every Goan’s slogan. “Mhadei is our lifeline and we won’t share or allow the government to divert Mhadei water to Karnataka. We strongly condemn Parrikar for making the promise to Yeddyurappa,” he said.
He said that there is no enough water for the people of Goa, but the government feels pity for the people of Hubli and Dharwad. “This is a political game being played by the BJP in view of the ensuing Assembly elections in Karnataka,” he said.
He said that since Karnataka has 27 MPs in the Lok Sabha that State has a huge leverage at the Centre and in order to help the BJP to win the elections there, the Goa government is promising to give Mhadei water to the people of Hubli and Dharwad.
