PORVORIM: An acute shortage of staff at the Mapusa Police Station has severely hampered the day-to-day working at the police station.
According to sources, the Mapusa Police Station is presently being managed presently by one police inspector, three police sub inspectors, 3 assistant police sub inspectors, 23 head constables and 79 police constables.
“There is acute shortage of police officers. Against the sanctioned strength of 13 officers, there are only seven officers, namely one police inspector, 3 police sub inspectors and 3 assistant police inspectors. Besides, of the three police sub inspectors, one PSI is on sick leave since the last six months. The position of ladies police constables is even worse. There are only three police constables at the Mapusa Police Station. This shortage of the police force has added heavy workload on the existing police staff, especially on the officers,” said a source.
The Mapusa Police Station has to cater to a vast jurisdiction, consisting of 19 panchayats and one municipality.
“The population of the panchayat areas has increased manifold during the last 10 years. Traffic has also increased immensely and accidents have become a regular feature in Mapusa and surrounding areas. Due to this large jurisdiction, the Mapusa Police is often unable to reach the accident spot on time on account of acute staff shortage.”
“When policemen reach the spot, they have to face the ire of the public. There has been a sizable increase in crimes, especially robberies and murders in Mapusa and adjoining areas,” the source added.
