Agri Dept has cleared all payments due to Benaulim farmer: Salcete ZAO

MARGAO: In connection with the plight of the Benaulim-based farmer Raymond Costa, whose black rice crop had suffered damages last year, the Salcete Zonal Agricultural Office (ZAO) has emphasised that all payments that were due to the farmer had already been cleared and sanctioned by the Agriculture Department.

It may be recalled that Costa, whose fields are located near the under-construction Western Bypass stretch in Benaulim, had suffered losses last year when his black rice crop was damaged due to flooding and other issues such as dust. Costa had then approached the Agriculture Department seeking compensation.

The ZAO has stressed that they had completed all the necessary formalities and procedures in Costa’s case.

“The sanction order of the latest bill and subsidy in question was issued on December 27, 2023,” the ZAO said and explained that Costa does not have a Krishi Card (KC) but the KC is the name of his mother and that all her previous cases had been cleared too.

The ZAO categorically rejected the farmer’s claims about support price of last year’s Rabi crop still not being cleared. “There are no pending support price cases of rabi season now,” the ZAO added.
