MARGAO: A workshop on the scientific aspect of coconut cultivation was organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra in association with Zonal Agriculture Office, Agricultural Technology Management Agency South Goa and Chinchinim Village Panchayat, at Chinchinim.
Fr Alex J D’Souza, parish priest of Our Lady of Hope Church was the chief guest. Sarpanch of Village Panchayat Chinchinim Inacina Rebello, Deputy Sarpanch Valentino Barretto and Marcus D’Mello, coordinator of Village Development Committee attended the inaugural function.
Anil Noronha, scientist in Horticulture spoke on cultivation aspects in coconut cultivation.
He covered points on selection of seedlings, coconuts, planting and digging of pits, fertilizer, irrigation and harvesting. While Girish Kenkre, scientist in Plant Protection spoke on pest and disease management in coconut trees.
He stressed on the topics of different pest and disease like attack of Rhinocerous Beetle, Red Palm Weevil. Leaf eating Caterpillar, Bud Rot, stem bleeding and Ganoderma Wilt affecting the coconut trees and their control measures, besides Swapnil Sukhtankar, Soil Chemist spoke on soil sampling technique and how to draw a soil sample.
Hrishikesh Pawar, scientist in Fisheries guided the participants on Ornamental fish rearing as an allied activity to double income of farmers.
Shariff Furtado, Zonal Agriculture Officer explained to the farmers various schemes of the Directorate of Agriculture.
He also informed that the Agriculture Department has plans to train the youth with regard to coconut plucking.
