MAPUSA: The historic central jail Aguada, which has been converted into a museum, will be inaugurated in April, informed Science and Technology Minister Michael Lobo on Saturday.
Speaking to media persons at Calangute, Lobo said a museum, art gallery and freedom fighters gallery is ready. The State government decided to convert the Aguada jail into a museum at a cost of Rs 25 crore and to make it a tourist attraction.
According to Lobo, in 2017 attempts were made to convert the historic Aguada jail into a hotel but he vehemently opposed. “In 2017 there were attempts to convert Aguada jail into a hotel. But I strongly opposed and demanded that it be restored and preserved for generation next,” he said
Lobo said the museum will have history of Goa’s liberation struggle while, canons have also been restored there. It will also have sound and light show and films on Goa’s liberation. A nominal entry fee will be charged and the money will be utilised for jail’s maintenance.
Earlier, Lobo inaugurated the work of hotmixing of road from St Anthony’s Church to Porient ground and upto Baga beach. Calangute sarpanch Shawn Martins and panchayat members were present.
He said the work leading to the jail and internal roads will be hot-mixed and that a new 15 MLD water treatment plant will be commissioned at Calangute.
