Ahead of BJP meet, Cong dares Union Home Minister to clarify stand on Mhadei diversion

PANJIM/MARGAO: The Congress party in Goa has demanded that Union Home Minister Amit Shah clarify his controversial statement on the Mhadei river water diversion issue during his upcoming public meeting in the State.

During an election rally in Belagavi, Shah had said that the decades-long water sharing issue between Goa and Karnataka was resolved and congratulated the Karnataka CM for obtaining Mhadei water for the State.

Congress media cell

chairman Amarnath Panjikar has urged Shah to clarify his statement, saying that failure to do so would lead the public to call them ‘Masters of U-Turn’.

Addressing reporters in Margao on Wednesday, South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha also criticized Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for campaigning for the BJP in Karnataka, while both states are locked in a legal battle over the Mhadei river diversion.

Sardinha has alleged that the real purpose behind the diversion is for steel plants in Karnataka and criticized the Central and State government for allowing coal transportation via railway tracks and Mormugao Port Authority, despite opposition from the people of Goa. Sardinha also made other demands such as legalising sand mining, repairing all bundhs in the State, and bringing down fuel prices.
