Aided institutes asked to follow reservation policy
HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, JULY 21
Education Minister Babush Monserrate has said all educational institutes that receive 100 per cent grants from the Government should follow reservation policy.
Monserrate was replying to the complaint by Opposition members, Fatorda MLA, Damu Naik and Poinguinim MLA, Ramesh Tawadkar during Question Hour, on Wednesday.
Naik as well as Tawadkar said not all colleges follow reservation policy and sought to know whether the Government will stop grants to the erring colleges.
Monserrate said he was aware of the problem and had sought details from the institutes to examine if the policy had been followed. He, however, assured appropriate action against those institutions that have faulted.
SPORTS MERIT MARKS: The Opposition demanded that sports merits marks be given to students aspiring to join professional colleges.
The Opposition members questioned the use of sports merit marks if they were not extended to students opting for professional courses and felt the matter could be taken up with Medical Council of India and other institutes governing professional education.
Opposition leader Manohar Parrikar also questioned the futility of issuing notification implementing sports policy at the end of the academic year.
The notification was issued on April 15, 2009 to be implemented from the academic year 2009-2010.
Monserrate clarified that sports merits marks are not for students taking up professional courses. Parrikar, however, urged the Government to take up the issue with appropriate authorities.
