AITUC demands revision of minimum wages

PANJIM: The All India Trade
Union Congress (AITUC) Goa committee has demanded the revision of minimum wages
in view of the Seventh Pay Commission.

Addressing media persons, AITUC General
Secretary Christopher Fonseca said there are 3,00,000 workers in Goa employed
at industrial units, construction sites, hotels, commercial establishments,
government as well as semi government departments who will directly benefit if
the wages are revised by the government.

Fonseca said that the daily wage
of an unskilled worker should be Rs 600, semiskilled should be Rs 650,
skilled should be Rs 700 and highly skilled worker should be Rs 750.

Fonseca said the minimum wages
in Delhi is Rs 425 per day whereas in comparison Goa which has a 25% higher cost
of living has a wage of only Rs 284 per day for an unskilled worker.

Fonseca alleged that the
government is hand-in-glove with employers and big corporates to exploit the working
class.
