PANJIM: The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) on Tuesday held demonstrations in the city against the “negligible” hike in minimum wages that affects nearly three to four lakh workers in the State.
The State government had issued notification on August 11 this year, revising the minimum wages by Rs 100 after the gap of almost eight years from Rs 307 to Rs 407 per day for unskilled workers category, Rs 468 per day for semi-skilled workers 523 per day for skilled workers and Rs 565 per day for highly skilled/supervisory workers.

The workers under the banner of AITUC protested at Azad Maidan, Panjim against the insignificant hike and demanded the withdrawal of what they called pro-capitalist notification.
Workers shouted slogans demanding that minimum salary be increased to Rs 24,000 per month. They also expressed their dissatisfaction with anti-labour policies, including the prohibition of strikes within pharmaceutical companies.
In a spirited display of unity, the protesters also advocated for improved remuneration and enhanced benefits from their respective companies. The demonstration marked a call for fair treatment and highlighted the urgent need for policies that prioritize the well-being of workers.
The AITUC leaders Com Christopher Fonseca, R D Mangueshkar and Prasanna Utagi underscored the determination of workers to secure their rights and foster a more equitable work environment.
