PORVORIM: All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) General Secretary Christopher Fonseca opined that there is a need to bring workers in the transport sector, petrol pumps, and small establishments under the organised sector so that they would get better wages and facilities. He also stated that out of 45 crore workers in India, only 10 percent fall under the organized sector, but the situation in Goa is better as 35 percent of the labour force is organized.
Fonseca was speaking after inaugurating the 11th All-Goa State Conference of AITUC-Goa in Porvorim on Sunday.
He also alleged that the BJP Central government is in the process of diluting the existing labour laws to benefit the corporate sector and suppress the working masses. He stated, “BJP-ruled states like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have already amended the Industrial Disputes Act, Factories Act, Contract Labour Act and Apprenticeship Act, making hire and fire much easier for employers. It will result in rampant casualization of employment. If the Goa government also tries to amend the aforesaid acts, then all 53,000 members of AITUC will oppose the move tooth-and-nail.
AITUC Deputy General Secretary Raju Mangeshkar presented the audited statement of accounts.
indicating the financial position of AITUC-Goa.
