Aldona cable bridge in dire straits due to lack of maintenance

MAPUSA: The Aldona cable bridge, once a flagship project boasting of advanced technology, is now deteriorating rapidly due to the absence of proper maintenance. With parts of the bridge corroding and showing signs of wear and tear, its structural integrity is at stake.

Locals have noticed minor cracks on the tower and severe rusting on the anchorage, compromising the crucial components that support the bridge. The railings on both sides of the bridge have also corroded and one of the railings is severely damaged, posing a risk of injury to anyone relying on it for support.

Since its construction, the concerned department responsible for maintenance has failed to address the bridge’s deteriorating condition, especially the critical anchorage points. 

Despite repeated requests from villagers and written letters to authorities, including the principal chief engineer of PWD and officials of GSIDC, no action has been taken to carry out essential maintenance work on the bridge and its railings.

Locals express deep disappointment in the neglect of the once – beautiful Aldona-Corjuem cable stayed bridge, which was a point of pride for the region. The bridge, constructed with advanced technology, now stands in a state of disrepair, with the local panchayat also failing to fulfill its duties in maintaining the structure.

With the bridge being the sixth of its kind in the country, it is essential for the authorities concerned to take immediate action and allocate resources for maintenance. The negligence has led to severe rusting and deterioration all over the bridge, raising serious safety concerns.

The lack of even routine maintenance has left the railings dangerous and electric poles non-functional. Pedestrians face challenges due to overgrowth of vegetation on the sidewalks. The responsibility falls on the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (GSIDC) to address the situation, including testing and maintaining the cables. Unless prompt action is taken, the bridge is at risk of major damage.

The deteriorating state of the Aldona cable bridge demands urgent attention and appropriate action from the authorities to ensure public safety and preserve this once-grand symbol of modern engineering.
