MAPUSA: Aldona villagers, led by the members of the local Congress unit, confronted the PWD engineer demanding immediate repair of roads in the constituency and installation of speed breakers at different junctions to prevent accidents.
They also submitted a memorandum containing their demands to the engineer.
In the memorandum, the Congress said, “There is an urgent need of installation of speed breakers on the Olaulim-Sai Nagar junction and near Mhambre store-Olaulim junction.”
The memorandum demands that the PWD undertake resurfacing and repair of main roads in the constituency; resurfacing and repair of all the internal roads in Calvim-Aldona and covering of open drainage on the main roads.
Congress spokesman Amarnath Panjikar informed that the spots mentioned in the memorandum need urgent installation of speed breaker since it is causing major inconvenience to the residents and commuters.
“Nine fatal accidents have occurred on this Olaulim-Sai Nagar junction and several other people have suffered injuries,” he said.
“A year ago, on this same day, we had submitted similar representation to the previous engineer and then deputy collector. They then assured to undertake repair of roads and installation of speed breaker. However, the authorities failed to fulfil their assurance,” he complained.
The Congress also criticised the Aldona MLA for “failing” to undertake repair of roads in the constituency.
