Alleging harassment, senior citizens demand commission

PANJIM: Stating that sections of youth across the State were harassing parents due to property disputes, a group of senior citizens on Thursday urged the government to set up a Goa Senior Citizens Commission.
Addressing the media, social worker Rajan Ghate said, “Our main demand to the government is to set up a Goa Senior Citizens Commission which will monitor the issues of senior citizens or family cases. We also told the Social Welfare Minister of our demands and the need for setting up the commission.”
He added, “The government had announced that the commission would be formed but it has been more than six months and nothing has been done. Social welfare ministry will also be holding a high-power committee meet on June 12 to initiate steps for the welfare of senior citizens in the State.”
Senior citizens also demanded that they should be allowed to reclaim gifted or transferred properties.
“Many senior citizens are being abused by their children, but the hands of the police are tied. The government must bring in an amendment to make offences against them non-bailable,” Ghate said.
