Alto-Mapusa residents cry for a single drop of water since a week

MAPUSA: Where are the 16,000 litres of free water, shouted Alto Mapusa residents as they marched on the streets, claiming they didn’t receive a single drop of water in the last one week. People said that with taps going dry, they are forced to store and use rainwater for their household activities, which is a big relief.

If the situation does not improve, frustrated consumers have threatened to hold a empty utensil morcha.

“We are storing rain water and using it to wash dishes, clothes and bathing. We have now started getting cold. Is the government going to look after us? We keep the taps open throughout with the hope of water but from the last one week, we haven’t received a single drop of water but bills are regular delivered to us and we have to pay them,” a senior citizen complained.

“Since April we have been facing this issue of acute water shortage but for the last four days there’s no water. We stay in the building so we had to hire tankers paying Rs 800 every day. This month we got a bill of Rs 4000 for the building and we paid it but even after paying bills we don’t get water. What is this government up to? Water is a basic necessity but what kind of progress is this? Every day we have to check for water or call for a tanker,” another consumer said.

“For the last five days there is no water in our taps. We cannot even get a tanker as the road is narrow and the tanker doesn’t reach there. Also, the pipeline in our locality is ruptured. Four times we complained to the PWD but nobody has come to repair the same,” another consumer complained.
