PONDA: Animal rights NGOs Tuesday protested in front of the Ponda police station against its alleged failure to prevent an alleged illegal slaughter of three bulls at the Goa Meat Complex.
Govansha Raksha President Hanumant Parab, who led the protest, alleged that despite a complaint by his group that three bulls would be illegally slaughtered at the Meat Complex, the Ponda police failed to prevent the slaughter.
Claiming that the bulls were slaughtered with the connivance of the police and government authorities, Parab threatened to lead a morcha to the Ponda police station if the police failed to take action against those who slaughtered the bulls, within two day.
According Parab, the three bulls were brought from Maharashtra to Goa through Karnataka, on May 28, on bogus transportation and fitness certificates. Despite the complaint by Govansha Raksha on same day, police did nothing except promising to act against the violators; and the Meat Complex also slaughtered the bulls despite their police complaint.
Parab said that the slaughter was against the High Court guidelines and therefore the slaughter was a contempt of court.
He also alleged that the bulls were kept in Meat Complex premises without fodder and water, which he said, amounted to cruelty to animals.
When contacted, Meat Complex Chairman Linden Montero said, “We have not violated any High Court guideline, nor we wish to violate it. We are slaughtering the animals by following the rules. No legal provision was violated in the slaughter of the three bulls and the police are free to investigate any allegation of illegal slaughter.”
When asked whether the complaint by Govansha Raksha was baseless, Montero said he didn’t want to reply to the question.
