PONDA: Bhima Naik, a bus driver from Ramnagar, Karnataka, who was seriously injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck near the Biodiversity Park at Suktollem, Mollem, on Sunday, succumbed to his injuries at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim, later that night.
The truck driver Khwaja Mohiddin Maniyar (48) from Hubballi was killed on the spot. Following the accident, both drivers were trapped inside their vehicles and had to be extricated by fire personnel. It took Ponda fire personnel over an hour to free the bus driver, who was trapped in the cabin.
Meanwhile, a woman passenger identified as Anjali Bansali, 31, from Bengaluru, is undergoing treatment at GMC Hospital, Bambolim, where her condition is reported to be critical.
The accident occurred when the Goa-Bengaluru-bound sleeper coach collided with an oncoming truck, killing the truck driver instantly. Additionally, a six-member family from Porvorim, returning home in an SUV, escaped with minor injuries after the bus collided with their vehicle before ramming into a roadside tree.
According to police, the bus driver was driving in a rash and negligent manner.
