Apollo Hospital plans to operate sewage plant after rectification
HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, JULY 14
City-based Apollo Victor Hospital have told the Goa Pollution Control Board that the institution would soon rectify the sewage treatment plant installed at the hospital premises to contact discharge of waste water in the nullah.
Replying to the show cause notice served by the Pollution Control Board to immediately stop the release of untreated discharge into the water nullah, the Hospital has said that the sewage treatment plant is already in place at the hospital and disclosed plans to operate the same after some rectification.
On the question of waste and garbage being dumped at the nullah in front of the hospital, the hospital management made it categorically clear to the Board that the bio-medical waste is being segregated inside the premises before the Margao Municipality collects the segregated waste from the hospital.
The Pollution control Board had claimed that discharge from a chamber of the hospital was seen flowing into a nullah leading to the River Sal. Analysis of a collected sample of the discharge had indicated that the values of BOD and COD exceed the permissible limits for discharge into water bodies.
The Board had last week directed the hospital to immediately stop the release of untreated discharge into the water nullah leading to the River Sal. Further directions were issued to the hospital to modify, alter, extend such existing sewage/effluent treatment system to ensure safe disposal of treated sewage.
The Board has set a deadline of 15 days to both Apollo Victor Hospitals and the Konkan Railway Corporation to file a compliance report of the action taken within 15 days, failing which the Board has warned of action against the two institutions under the Water Prevention and Control of Pollution Act.
Meanwhile, the Konkan Railway Corporation has also replied to the Board saying that the Corporation intends to set up an effluent treatment plant at the train washing yard to contain the sludge.
