BICHOLIM/BELGAUM: About 1,200 kgs of beef which was headed to Goa in two vehicles was seized and two persons were arrested, following a raid by Belgaum police along with the Go Vansh Raksha of Shri Ram Sena at Belgaum.
According to reports, about 1,200 kgs of beef was being transported from Belgaum to Goa on Saturday at about 10.30 pm.
Acting on a tip-off by the Sri Ram Sena activists, Belgaum Market Police on Saturday night seized 1,200 kgs of beef that was being transported to Goa.
The beef had been brought from slaughter houses in Nesargi in Belgaum taluka and was being transported to Goa in two vehicles (GA-03-K-0312) and (KA-49-2803).
Go Vansh Raksha Jai Shri Ram Sena (Belgaum) President Ramakant Konduskar along with volunteers, Maruti Sutar, Shankar Patil, Sachin Chavan, Raju Talwar and Rohan Jadhav confronted the two vehicles in Belgaum.
Later, Mainnuddin Shaukat Killedar and Maqdoomsab Dastgir Bepari were arrested and released on bail. Police also seized the two vehicles.
According to official sources, the beef was being transported without any valid licence and an appropriate medical certificate.
“Incidents of illegal transportation of beef and cattle meat are on the rise in Belgaum district. Despite the ban, meat is being transported late in the night to Goa. After informing the police, our activists who were waiting near Chavat Galli here stopped the vehicles and nabbed the culprits with the help of police,” Ramakant Konduskar of Sri Ram Sena told Herald.
“About 16 cattle were slaughtered in this case. After the seizure, we buried the beef,” added Konduskar.
