PANJIM: Around 40 percent of the alcohol retail stores and bars and restaurants in Goa will not get the licences renewed from April 1, 2017 as they are located within 500 metres of the national and State highways.
The Excise Department’s records reveal that 11,974 licensed retail and wholesale stores are operating in the State with a maximum 4260 in Bardez taluka, followed by 2217 in Salcette and 1328 in Tiswadi.
However, the exact number of structures, including the bars and restaurantsl coming under the purview of the Supreme Court’s directives is still being ascertained by a taluka-level survey. The survey teams are expected to submit their reports to the department on Tuesday in a bid to expedite the process to implement the SC order.
The data, updated till November 30, 2016, indicates that Sattari has the least 237 retail and wholesale shops.
