PANJIM: In a gruesome double murder reported at Arpora on Sunday, renowned artist Shireen Mody and her gardener were found dead at her residence in Viegas Waddo.
Anjuna Police Inspector Navlesh Desai informed reporters that two bodies were found at the spot.
“The police have recovered two bodies and one of them has been identified as her gardener. The inquiries are on and we are trying to get full details,” the PI said adding that the two bodies have now been sent for post mortem.
Police sources said prima facie, it appears that the two appeared to be involved in a scuffle which resulted in fatal injuries.
“The gardener allegedly hit Shireen Mody with an iron rod during an argument. A neighbour saw him covered in blood and running away from Mody’s house. The gardener succumbed to injuries sustained during the scuffle,” the sources added.
Originally from South Mumbai, Mody lived and worked in Goa for over three decades.
According to a national media reports, Mody was married to a German-architect, who passed away. She leaves behind her daughter Saffron Wiehl, who is an illustrator.
Mody’s works are generally large-format acrylic-on-canvas depictions of Goa’s life and landscape.
Her themes are intensely local with a focus on tropical sunlight and shadow.
In 2016, she began a series of paintings of the coconut palm. In 2018, she started “Studio Arpora” in Arpora village to showcase her works along with that of her daughter Wiehl’s.
