Two brothers from Tilamol-Quepem were arrested on Friday morning in connection with different offences, with one of them alleging that he was assaulted and abused by the police.
The arrests sparked off anger in the village, with many claiming that it is a ploy to scare villagers from attending a public meeting in Panjim. According to sources in Quepem police, Motes Antao was arrested while he was proceeding in his truck at about 10 am.
Speaking to Herald, police informed that Motes was taken into police custody based on a police complaint filed by one Ganesh Velip on January 29.  While Motes was booked for allegedly abusing a court bailiff under Sections 353, 504 and 506 r/w 34 of IPC, Motes has claimed in the bail application that he was not even present at his house on the day of the incident.
Motes has alleged that he had been assaulted three times by police at Quepem while in police custody.  When contacted, Quepem PI Devendra Gaad denied that the police had assaulted or abused the accused in custody.
Quepem police also arrested his brother Tedos, while he was waiting for a bus at Tilamol for allegedly restraining a security guard of a mine on September 13, 2008. Police booked Tedos under Sections 341, 323, 427, 506(ii) r/w 34 of IPC.
The Samguem Judicial Magistrate later released Motes and Tedos Antao on a personal bond of Rs 5,000 upon furnishing the like amount surety by both of them.
