PANJIM: After a trail of destruction on Friday, Cyclone Kyarr moved away from the west coast, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa forecasting reduction in rainfall. In what could come as major relief to the people this Diwali, IMD has forecast clear weather for the State for the next four days.
The weather department, has, however, asked fishermen not to venture into the sea for the next 24 hours due to rough weather conditions and gusty winds.
After Friday’s devastation, on Saturday too, several parts of the State received heavy rainfall, though the impact was less.
“Yesterday’s (Friday) cyclonic storm “Kyarr” over eastcentral Arabian Sea moved north-northeastwards and intensified into a severe cyclonic storm in the same evening,” IMD said. “It is very likely to move west-northwestwards towards Oman coast during next five days. In view of movement of the system away from the western coast rainfall activity over Goa is likely to reduce from the late evening of October 26,” it added.
“No weather warning on subsequent four days,” IMD said, adding that the wind warning continues to remain.
IMD said that gale wind speeds reaching 135-145 kmph gusting to 160 kmph prevail around the system centre over Eastcentral Arabian Sea and likely to increase gradually to 170-180 kmph gusting to 200 kmph from early hours of October 27 (Sunday) onwards over eastcentral & adjoining westcentral Arabian Sea around the system centre.
“Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph likely along off Maharashtra & Goa and Karnataka coast during next 12 hours and along & off south Gujarat coast during next 24 hours,” it said warning fishermen against venturing into sea.
On Saturday, the State received around 70mm of rainfall taking the post monsoon seasonal total to 517.4mm, which is 256 per cent surplus. The average rainfall till now is 145 mm.
