MARGAO: Alert citizens of Mungul-Fatorda, with the assistance of the police, halted the illegal dumping of rubble on agricultural land on Thursday.
According to the citizens, the illegal land filling was being carried out to construct roads. However, locals claimed that the land being filled was designated as agricultural. Speaking to reporters, local man Milagres Fernandes stated the quick response of the Fatorda police helped them halt the land filling.
“The land filling activities were suspicious, and we were shocked to witness such actions that damage the environment and agricultural land,” he said. “How can anyone simply carry out the work of filling agricultural land to make a road, and that too illegally?”
He also urged the local councillor to stay vigilant. “The land may be private, but the impact on fields and the environment must be considered when filling it with mud and debris,” added Milagres.
Remedious Fernandes demanded that the relevant authorities initiate an inquiry into the matter and punish those involved in the illegal land filling.
He pointed out that the people of Goa are already losing agricultural land due to the builders’ lobby, stressing the urgent need for the government to address such issues seriously. “It is crucial to protect our fields and water bodies,” he added.
