Attending CMEs must for docs to continue practice

PANJIM: Renewing licences for doctors in Goa has become strict as the Goa Medical Council have made a concept known as the continuing medical education (CME) mandatory for granting licences.

Speaking to media persons, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Goa president  Dr. Prasad Netravalkar said, “The council is very strict in renewal of doctors  licences and there have been cases where they have even revoked licences for those  that didn’t get the required points.”
CME programmes aimed at keeping doctors up to date with new technologies and  developments are organised annually. Doctors attending the programmes are given  points which are accumulated and on reaching 30 points are allowed to renew their  licences.
The programmes held in north as well as south Goa, are organised by the IMA at  one of their seven branches. Reputed speakers explain latest trends in the field of medicine following which attending doctors are granted one or three points  depending on the number of lectures.
This year over 800 doctors are expected to attend the CME program at Cidade de  Goa in October. Netravalkar said that while it was mandatory for doctors renewing  licences to attend, a pardon was granted to elderly doctors that can’t make it for  the programme.
