MARGAO: Labour Minister Avertano Furtado on Monday proposed a medical college under the ESI in the state, besides a dialysis centre at the under construction Margao ESI hospital, which is expected to be commissioned within the next four months.
At a review meeting of the ESI Margao hospital under construction held on Monday, Avertano proposed the medical college under the ESI at Porvorim. “During discussions, the ESI officials maintained that a medical college can be set up under the ESI scheme provided we have a 300-bedded hospital. I proposed the medical college since the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has promised to make available land in Porvorim,” he said.
The Labour Minister said that the dialysis unit at ESI hospital was proposed by him for the benefit of the patients, who are charged huge fees by some of the centres. “Patients from Margao and Salcete can benefit a lot from the dialysis unit. The ESI officials said it can be set up after the commissioning of the hospital,” he added.
Replying to a question, Avertano said that work on the ESI hospital was nearing completion, adding that the power cabling work would be completed within the next 2-3 months.
