PANJIM: Unattached St Cruz MLA Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate is gearing up to fight the Congress in the 2017 Assembly elections. Confirming that he will contest from Panjim constituency as a United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP) candidate, he asserted that he would align with any political party other than the two national ones.
Speaking to a section of the media on Friday, he targeted the Congress for expelling him without any reason or issuing notice.
“I will contest the 2017 elections on UGDP ticket, and align (with a political party),” he said refusing to disclose further details. Asked whether he would join hands with BJP or Congress, he replied in the negative. “I don’t want to,” he said, adding, “Even if there is a proposal from the Congress, I will not go. They expelled me without any reason.”
Speaking about the resurrection of UGDP, which he intends to take over, Monserrate said the party structure would be in place by May-end as the executive committee is in the process of being reconstituted.
Monserrate has been quoted as saying that UGDP will contest 25 seats, including all 12 seats from Tiswadi and Bardez.
