PANJIM: With the City Mayor elections scheduled in March, Panjim is set to get a new mayor, with Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate, who heads the ruling panel at the Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP), confirming he will replace the mayoral candidate.
Surendra Furtado is the current Mayor with the support of 17 councillors for the Monserrate panel.
Speaking to Herald, Monserrate said, “Surendra Furtado has been the Mayor of CCP for four years and definitely there will a new mayor candidate this time. It is time for a change. I have not had any meetings with the Mayor but for sure there will be a new face this time.”
He, however, did not disclose the possible names for the post but sources said that Deputy Mayor Lata Parekh and councillor Uday Madkaikar are in the race.
“There are still 40 days left. Babush is the leader of our group so let him decide. He has the full right to decide, who am I to decide, he is the main leader of our group. He will decide whom he wants to put where and I have no problem in that,” Furtado said, reacting to the news.
He added, “If somebody is a better choice than me then they are most welcome, I do not have any issue or any problem.”
